Just a quick update on recent activities.
Jemma Cuthbert and Ann Tomlinson now sit on the Welland Rivers Trust Mid-catchment Steering Group, which has just been formed by Perry Burns, the WRT Community Engagement officer. After a recent meeting, it was suggested that the Neighbourhood Plan groups in both Ketton/Tinwell and North Luffenham should chat together about planning for ecological corridors. So some draft corridor maps are being created. At some stage it would be great to have your views on these. You might also be interested in these two WRT projects -the Welland Interaction Survey and the Welland Memories Project .
We have also just started to record the traditional names of all the 80 or so fields in Ketton parish with help from local farmers and their families. We have already been given such wonderful names as Paradise and Cocked Hat! It would be good to preserve the traditional field names so local people can use them and get to know the whole parish and its agricultural heritage a bit more.
We've been adding regular blogs to the website here but not many viewers so far. Jemma has also offered to set up a twitter account on behalf of the group, and to tweet from it about KGSG projects, events, wildlife sightings etc. It has been suggested that we should try to find someone to help by adding occasional notes to Nextdoor Ketton. Do let me know if you who might be interested in helping with this.
One of our group, Annie Hall, has come up with the idea of a community seed swap in Ketton. She has already had a brief meeting with a few interested people but now wants to see if anyone else is interested in helping to plan and set up the project. She can be contacted on annie@annie-hall.co.uk and has already set up a Facebook page #kettoncommunityseedswap.
We have just pruned the apple trees in the new community orchard in Hall Close to help them form a good shape. Annie also spotted an article in the Guardian about Edith Weston Quarry and Panter’s orchard, both of which are next to the new permissive footpath around the Ketton quarry and towards the new road bridge.
We are working with Ketton Parish Council to make sure that Hall Close is a great place for people of all ages. So together we are now looking at getting some new equipment (possibly outdoor gym, youth shelter, seating etc) but want to know from people in the village what they would like, ideally before the end of February. It certainly seems a good time to do this as so many people are village-bound and enjoying the local green spaces. It will also help get our group better known, and for more than just nature matters. So do let the Parish Council know what you think? Click here to give us your thoughts on a short form.
